Procrastinate or see you tomorrow attitude.
The word “procrastinate” means; to defer action or decision about something. It is an action that falls on what is differed or postponed: a trip, or a speech, for example. It is a very common word that we can find a lot of places lately. The financial struggles we are living now are causing a lot of stress on everyone and our mind sometimes is not very clear on what to do first.
When we face some task we do not want to do, either because we do not like it, or because of the fear of the unknown results that might come, it seems that we turn on pain zones in our brain. In an act of protection or justification, we seek unconsciously, the way to stop this negative feeling by directing attention to something else, (this is what we expect).
The mechanisms to protect ourselves from these situations of insecurity and discomfort are very different, we are finding the way to avoid that pain doing something else. All around the internet we found a big number of so-called "gurus" that are telling us the way to be proactive and to have success in life.
Particularly I believe that these gurus get out attention because of their proposals, which are sometimes innovative and fall into a very fertile land of those who are looking for the idea or program that will get them out of that comfort zone.
You have to be careful of so many successful gurus who are appearing everywhere and analyze their proposals.
Even if we sometimes are aware of the consequences of not doing the task that is waiting for us, some mysterious mechanism in our mind paralyzes us.
But it happens that shortly after starting that unpleasant task, that "discomfort" disappears but in our mind there is a fight to stop and stay safe. Sometimes we postpone important decisions and tasks until the very last minute when there is not enough time left to do a good job.
Among these tasks, we defer the moment to prepare properly a speech. The sense of anxiety overwhelms us once we are aware of the "fateful" news that we have to speak the next session, this notice is enough to bury our motivation for a better occasion.
It happens that doing so brings later high levels of anxiety on the days before the session. Especially when we realize that we are not properly prepared and we realize that the ending result will not be the best. And we try to think that the experience or skill we have so far will help to get along on the situation.
What can we do to fight "procrastination" or the deferral of our decisions to prepare top-level presentations?
The first idea is; be humble and recognize the origin of that fear, it might be that we feel that we do not have enough information of the subject and maybe we didn’t make the proper research on the subject. On the other hand, there is the extreme that we are such a perfectionist person and we have searched all around the internet for a complete bibliography on the subject and we have a humungous amount of information. But the problem is to decide what ideas are ones we will present at the time we have to deliver the speech.
We need to make an honest analysis and analyze the reasons for that attitude. Maybe we could even need help from specialists in that area.
