EXPLAINING ABSTRACT AND CONCRETE FACTS.
I recently presented a talk at my Club in which I spoke of the kind of work I do. With a lot of enthusiasm, I prepared the material with the best examples and the most descriptive ideas I considered. After the talk, I found that the concept I was handling was a bit abstract and although for me it was very clear, it was difficult for the audience to assimilate it.
I understood the difficulty of describing a concrete concept and an abstract concept for any audience. The abstract is ethereal, immaterial and difficult to visualize, while the concrete is physical, palpable and demonstrable.
If your audience is not involved in the topic you are talking about, for some of them will be difficult to follow if you do not use some means to make the explanation more visual.
Today more than ever is necessary to be able to define, describe and explain in a simple way those abstract concepts as to be able to secure an investment for your idea of start-up, motivate the public or your team to take your ideas.
Remember; if you can touch the concept, it is concrete. If not, it is abstract.
Concepts that may seem simple to others may not be so clear to understand and we might lose the attention of an investor because we cannot properly present the idea.
At Toastmasters we can help you improve those presentations. Project 4 of the competent communication manual entitled "How to say it" suggests you work on existing rhetorical resources that reinforce the idea, among them, are;
• Metaphors
• Analogies
• Alliterations
• Triads
For your presentation to be for professional or personal use, use these resources and you can present abstract concepts in an effective way and so that others take action on your ideas.
And you, what techniques or resources do you use to explain abstract concepts? What worked for you? Toastmasters can help you improve them.
